☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis hardcover volume collects the second half of the Golden Age Rulah, Jungle Goddess series, originally published by Fox Feature Syndicate in the late 1940s. Featuring stories written and drawn by Matt Baker, the book continues the adventures of the white jungle queen as she protects her African domain from various threats. Roy Thomas provides historical context and commentary throughout the collection.
In "The Wolf Doctor," Rulah faces a new threat as Amazo lays waste to Gahna's village and enslaves its people. When Gahna’s desperate attempt to use the idol of Janus backfires, she meets a tragic end after pricking her finger on the cursed artifact. Matt Baker’s dynamic art brings the jungle’s peril and emotional weight to life, while Jack Kamen’s striking cover captures the story’s haunting intensity.
In "The Wondrous Jade Ju-Ju," Jo faces a desperate gamble when Amazo lays waste to Gahna's village and enslaves its people. With hope dwindling, she turns to the idol of Janus, only to meet a tragic end after pricking her finger on its hidden poison.
In "null," Rulah and Saber are captured by Guna, who drugs them into appearing dead and deceives the Commissioner into believing Rulah died of fever and should be cremated. As the flames rise, the intense heat unexpectedly awakens them—just as Guna’s plan begins to unfold.
In "The Runaway Balloon," Betty’s final attempt to set a gas balloon record ends in a crash near Rulah’s jungle territory, leaving her stranded and reliant on the jungle goddess’s unexpected kindness. With the skies above her and danger lurking below, her fate takes an unexpected turn as she finds herself drawn into a world far removed from her high-flying ambitions.
