Written and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith, the story is a standalone, visceral exploration of Logan's transformation into a living weapon, set before his time with the X-Men. It's a seminal Wolverine tale that reshaped the character's backstory and remains a key piece of X-Men lore.
"Weapon X Prologue" delivers a stark, haunting origin moment for Logan, written and illustrated entirely by Barry Windsor-Smith in a visually striking, all-artist effort. After his brutal transformation, Logan awakens to a fabricated memory of killing his captors—Professor, Cornelius, and Hines—only to outwit them and vanish into the Canadian wilderness. The cover, also by Windsor-Smith, captures the grim intensity of the moment, making this a definitive early chapter in Wolverine’s story.

Logan returns to his senses after his transformation by Weapon X. The Professor, Cornelius and Hines, still very much alive, congratulate themselves on implanting the memory in Logan's brain of their own deaths at his hand, thus ensuring their safety. But Logan is craftier than they think. Logan escapes the Weapon X program and wanders off into the Canadian wilderness.
