Keith Ian Giffen, born November 30, 1952, was one of the more versatile and prolific figures in mainstream American comics, contributing as artist, writer, colorist, and inker across a career that spanned nearly five decades — from his first credits in 1975 until his death on October 9, 2023.

Giffen built his early reputation largely through DC Comics, where his work on the Legion of Super-Heroes established him as a distinctive visual storyteller with a fondness for dense, inventive page layouts. That sensibility carried into what became arguably his most beloved contribution: the late-1980s Justice League run, produced alongside writer J.M. DeMatteis and editor Kevin Maguire's pencils, which balanced genuine superhero plotting with sharp comedic timing. His titles Justice League America and Justice League Europe rank among the most-credited works in his catalog.

As a co-creator, Giffen left a considerable mark. He played a formative role in bringing Lobo, Rocket Raccoon, and Jaime Reyes — the third Blue Beetle — into existence, characters who each found substantial lives beyond their origins. Later career work included large-scale DC projects such as Countdown and The New 52: Futures End, as well as the reimagining Scooby Apocalypse.

Over more than 1,200 credited issues, Giffen demonstrated a restless creative range that resisted easy categorization.
