Karl Kesel, born January 7, 1959, is an American writer and inker whose long career has been centered primarily around DC Comics. He broke into the industry and steadily built a reputation for work that balances superhero action with genuine wit and character depth, accumulating credits across more than 700 issues spanning five decades.

Kesel is perhaps most widely recognized for his collaborations with artist Tom Grummett, a partnership that produced memorable runs on The Adventures of Superman and Superboy. That latter title also led to one of his most enduring contributions to comics culture: the creation of Harley Quinn, the first solo comic series devoted to the character who had captured reader imagination since her animated origins. His work on Section Zero with Grummett further demonstrated their creative chemistry outside the Superman family of titles.

Beyond DC, Kesel also contributed significantly to Marvel, with notable work on Fantastic Four among other titles. His inking style — precise yet expressive — complemented a wide range of pencillers throughout his career, while his scripts consistently favored warmth and accessibility without sacrificing complexity. He has been an active member of Periscope Studio, the Portland-based creative collective that has served as a hub for prominent comics talent. Across both his writing and his linework, Kesel remains a reliable, craftsman-like presence in mainstream American comics.
