Action Comics 80 Years of Superman: The Deluxe Edition #[nn] (2018)
Dan Jurgens was born on June 27, 1959, and has built one of the most enduring careers in mainstream American comics, working steadily from the early 1980s through the present day across both of the industry's major publishers.
Jurgens broke into the field in 1983 and quickly established himself as a reliable writer-artist whose clean, accessible storytelling style made him a natural fit for flagship titles. His most consequential work came during an extended run on DC's Superman line — spanning *The Adventures of Superman*, *Superman* vol. 2, and *Action Comics* — which culminated in the 1992 storyline "The Death of Superman," one of the most discussed comics events of the twentieth century. That run also produced several of his most significant character creations, including the villain Doomsday, the tragic Hank Henshaw, and the time-traveling hero Booster Gold, who later anchored his own series. He also co-created Jon Kent, Clark Kent's son, who has taken on growing importance in DC's publishing line.
At Marvel, Jurgens spent seven years writing *Thor* and contributed to *Captain America* and *The Sensational Spider-Man*, demonstrating comparable comfort with that publisher's characters. A brief 1995 stint on *Solar* for Valiant rounded out his publisher credits. Later work included *Batman Beyond* and *The New 52: Futures End*. Across more than 1,200 credited issues, Jurgens has proven a remarkably consistent craftsman whose contributions to superhero mythology remain widely read.
