Connors becomes entangled in a scheme involving his disreputable relative Captain Jake, who has allegedly smuggled something of international value into New York and hidden it in the Cracker Pot. The bartender Emile confronts Connors with knowledge that Jake has deceived him—rather than going to Washington on state business as promised, Jake secretly returned to New York and sailed for Boston. The narrative involves missing cargo, demanding sailors, and a failed opportunity to sell whatever contraband Jake brought.
