The issue also features "How 'Modest Jim' Won the $50 Prize" by William Lawrence, a frame-narrative story about a shy boy who studied through correspondence schools and solved a technical problem, eventually rising to become the boss—illustrating the rewards of self-improvement through spare-time education.
